Not Coal, Bahlil Reveals Cause of Power Outages in Several Regions
Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia has denied that power outages occurring in several areas on the island of Java, especially West Java, were caused by coal shortages. According to Bahlil, the blackouts were purely due to problems with power plant machinery.
"Until today, this evening (Thursday, 11 June 2026) I also had a meeting with PLN to discuss this issue. The issue of coal scarcity is not true, because our assignment has already reached 170 million tonnes," Bahlil said at the Presidential Palace Complex, quoted on Friday (12 June 2026).
"It is just that there are some troubles in several machines, as conveyed by PLN, and they will be resolved in the near future," he said.
Bahlil confirmed that there were indeed power outages in several areas of Java. "Yesterday there were (outages). It is not yet optimal, we are accelerating the recovery," he replied.
Furthermore, Bahlil stressed that the government and PLN are working to ensure there are no more rolling blackouts. "We are striving so that there will be no more outages soon, yes," he said.
Previously, ESDM Ministry spokesperson Dwi Anggia also denied that the power outages were caused by dwindling coal supplies for PLN power plants. "There is definitely no thinning coal supply. There are some technical disturbances. We have communicated with PLN to anticipate so that this incident does not recur," Anggia said at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources on Thursday (11/6/2026).
PLN had earlier issued an official announcement regarding the outages via social media on Wednesday (10/6/2026). At least 14 areas in West Java were affected by the rolling blackouts from Wednesday.
