PT Danantara Sumber Daya Indonesia (DSI) has explained the difference between its function and that of the mineral exchange to be established by the government.

DSI President Director Luke Thomas Mahony stressed that DSI and the mineral exchange have different roles in the commodity trading ecosystem, particularly in the mineral natural resources sector.

According to Luke, the mineral exchange will have a function related to commodity trading mechanisms and price formation. Meanwhile, DSI has a role in the verification stage of the prices that have been formed.

“So the role of the exchange is still evolving, but for me, the role of the exchange is different from the role of DSI,” Luke said at Wisma Danantara, Jakarta, Monday, 24 August 2026.

The explanation was delivered to clarify DSI’s position amid the government’s plan to establish a mineral exchange as part of strengthening the natural resource commodity trading ecosystem.

Luke explained that the main difference between DSI and the mineral exchange lies in the functions carried out by each institution.

The exchange has a role in forming or setting commodity prices through the available trading mechanisms. These prices then become a reference that can be used by relevant parties in the trading ecosystem.

Meanwhile, DSI does not carry out the same function. DSI plays a role in verifying the prices that have been formed before those prices are used by users.

“So, the exchange sets prices through different mechanisms. DSI’s role is to verify prices. Then there are users who use those prices,” Luke explained.

With this division, DSI is not positioned as an institution that replaces the function of the mineral exchange. The two can each have their own functions within the commodity trading chain.

Luke assessed that DSI and the mineral exchange can still operate side by side within a single ecosystem.

However, according to him, the division of functions must be made clear. This is important to prevent overlapping authority or roles between the two institutions.

“So, for me, what is important is, okay, both can coexist in the ecosystem, but the two must be distinguished, especially in terms of the roles they play,” he said.
