Not a Random Attack: US Attorney General Reveals Shooter's Mad Plan at Trump Event
The shooting incident that occurred at a journalists’ dinner in Washington DC has once again highlighted the rising threats against high-ranking US officials. Local authorities state that the perpetrator is suspected of specifically targeting government elements. US Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that the investigation is ongoing, but initial indications suggest the motive for the attack was not random. “Based on our initial understanding, we believe he was targeting members of the government,” Blanche said in an interview on the Face the Nation programme on Sunday (26/4/2026). Blanche emphasised that this conclusion did not come from the suspect’s confession, but from evidence collected in the initial investigation. He revealed that the FBI, along with law enforcement and the Secret Service, had conducted searches at several locations, including the suspect’s home in California and his accommodation in Washington DC. “This investigation has only been running for about 12 hours, but we have gathered quite a bit of evidence that we are now examining,” he said. According to him, the suspect is not being cooperative and is expected to be charged in federal court soon. In the incident, the perpetrator was known to have carried various weapons, including rifles, pistols, and knives. He is also suspected of having stayed at the event’s hotel for several days before carrying out his actions. Blanche stated that the perpetrator travelled cross-country by train from California to Washington DC. Nevertheless, he does not see this incident as a reason to immediately change gun ownership regulations or transportation security systems. “I do not see this as a matter of changing the law. This is about law enforcement doing its job and the perpetrator failing completely,” he said. The attack was thwarted before the perpetrator reached the core event area, where the President, Vice President, and several other high-ranking officials were present. Blanche assessed that the rapid response of the security apparatus was a key factor in preventing a greater tragedy.
