The North Sumatra Provincial Government is accelerating development efforts to achieve zero displaced persons by Eid al-Fitr. According to Basarin Yunus Tanjung, Assistant for Governance and Public Welfare at the Provincial Secretary’s Office, speaking at the Governor’s Office on Monday, 1,427 temporary housing units are currently under rapid construction across various locations in two regencies: South Tapanuli and Central Tapanuli.

Some temporary shelters (huntara) in three regencies in North Sumatra—South Tapanuli, North Tapanuli, and Central Tapanuli—are already occupied by displaced residents. Currently, 909 families or 3,506 people remain in evacuation centres, noted Basarin, who also chairs the North Sumatra Disaster Response Command Post.

According to provincial data, the thousands of temporary housing units for victims of the hydrometeorological disaster that occurred in late November 2025 are located across three regencies and cities in North Sumatra.

In South Tapanuli, there are five locations across five sub-districts: Angkola Barat with 123 units, Angkola Sangkunur with 11 units, Batang Toru with 245 units (now occupied), Angkola Selatan with 186 units (now occupied), and Siporok with 118 units (now occupied).

North Tapanuli has one location in Adiankoting sub-district with 40 units, which are now occupied. Central Tapanuli has 13 locations across six sub-districts: Pandan features the Pandan Student Housing complex with 77 units and the former Mangga Dua Golf Course site with 500 units; Sibabangun includes Muara Sibuntuon Health Centre Annex with 4 units and Muara Sibuntuon Community Hall with 8 units, plus Tapian Nauli with 75 units and Badiri with 250 units; Sitahuis includes Rampah Sitahuis Community Hall with 16 units and Nauli Sitahuis Community Hall with 8 units; and Tukka includes Sipange (planned 80 units) and Tanah Merah Hutanabolon (30 units).

In Pinangsori sub-district, the Pinangsori Haji Dormitory has 46 of 52 units occupied. Tukka has the Pasar Tukka Community Hall with 12 units occupied, and Pandan has the Student Housing site with 84 of 90 units now occupied.

The provincial government reaffirmed that several other temporary housing construction sites, particularly in Central Tapanuli and South Tapanuli, are in final completion stages. “With this, all displaced persons will be accommodated in temporary shelters. Hopefully they can celebrate Eid this year by living in these shelters,” Basarin stated.
