North Maluku UMKM Showcase at Dekranas Exhibition, Doko Bacan Ring Priced at IDR 38 Million
The 46th anniversary celebration of the National Crafts Council (Dekranas) is being held in Makassar, South Sulawesi. At the event, every province in Indonesia is exhibiting a variety of superior UMKM products, including those from North Maluku Province.
Observations at Trans Studio Mall (TSM) Makassar on Friday (10/7/2026) noted the North Maluku exhibition stand displaying various UMKM products, ranging from hand-drawn and printed batik, synthetic woven fabrics and non-machine looms (ATBM), Bacan stones, to various handicrafts. These products reflect the identity of several regions in North Maluku, such as Ternate City, Halmahera, and Bacan Island.
One item that attracted considerable attention was the hand-drawn batik featuring North Maluku’s natural wealth and culture through its motifs. These motifs include spices such as nutmeg and cloves, the bidadari bird, Bacan stones, and relics of the Ternate Sultanate like Fort Oranje and Fort Kastela.
‘The most difficult one to make is the distinctive Bacan stone motif; we paint it. It cannot be printed. We apply these painting techniques to batik,’ said North Maluku batik artisan Mukhlis Abdul Rauf.
The hand-drawn batik sarongs on display are priced from IDR 625,000 to IDR 1.2 million, depending on the motif used. Besides sarongs, scarves priced at IDR 300,000 to IDR 400,000 and bags sold for IDR 200,000 are also available.
Visitors can also see the woven sarong typical of Ternate City, known as Rapudino. The weaving features motifs of cloves, wajik, pandan slices, and bamboo combinations, and is sold starting from IDR 1 million for synthetic dyes and IDR 1.2 million for natural dyes.
Additionally, the North Maluku exhibition stand presents tote bags, bag charms, and ecoprint shoes made from various types of leaves. These ecoprint products are priced from IDR 55,000 to IDR 285,000.
Various other handicrafts are also on display, such as miniature machetes, salawaku shields, bracelets, and necklaces made by local artisans. These products are sold at prices ranging from IDR 30,000 to IDR 400,000.
Meanwhile, Bacan stone rings from South Halmahera are one of the superior products attracting visitors’ attention. According to the artisan, Bacan stones from Doko Village are generally green and contain the minerals chalcedony and chrysocolla, which are their distinctive characteristics.
‘Its advantage lies there, because the Bacan stone undergoes metamorphosis, changing colour from blackish-brown to clear,’ explained Bacan stone artisan Ikram.
The prices of the Bacan stone rings on display vary, starting from IDR 700,000, with the most expensive reaching IDR 38 million. Additionally, there are non-fibrous Obi Chalcedony rings priced at around IDR 8 million, while the fibrous type is priced starting from IDR 1 million.
The exhibition of products from several provinces as part of the 46th Dekranasda anniversary at TSM Makassar runs for four days, from Wednesday (8/7) to Saturday (11/7). The event features a variety of distinctive craft products from various regions, including North Maluku.
