Ternate (ANTARA) - The situation in North Maluku Province is gradually becoming conducive after the authorities officially confirmed the end of the early tsunami warning issued following a strong earthquake on Thursday morning.

North Maluku Governor Sherly Tjoanda, in her statement from Ternate on Thursday, expressed gratitude for the lifting of the tsunami warning. She also encouraged the public to resume activities gradually while prioritising safety aspects.

“Praise be to God, based on official information, the tsunami warning has ended. I invite all communities to return to activities gradually while still prioritising safety,” said Sherly.

This certainty was conveyed by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) after conducting intensive monitoring and analysis of the latest data related to the earthquake activity.

Since the earthquake occurred, communities in those areas spontaneously carried out self-evacuation to higher ground. The local government, along with relevant apparatus, moved quickly by activating emergency responses, including disseminating information and securing evacuation routes.

However, after a comprehensive evaluation of the earthquake data and potential sea waves, the BMKG stated that the tsunami threat has subsided and is no longer dangerous.

With the lifting of the early warning status, evacuees are now permitted to return to their respective homes.

Nevertheless, the BMKG continues to urge the public not to be complacent. The potential for aftershocks remains possible, so vigilance must still be maintained, especially for residents living in disaster-prone areas.

“Calmness and discipline of the community in following instructions are key. Stay alert, continue to monitor official information, and look after each other,” she added.

Currently, the local government is still carrying out follow-up measures, including assessing the impact of the earthquake and ensuring the condition of affected communities. Several initial reports mention damage to buildings at some points, although there are no official reports regarding casualties.

In addition, relevant agencies are also working to ensure that basic public services continue to operate normally, including access to electricity, communication, and logistics distribution in the affected areas.
