North Korean Soldier Defects, Detained by South Korean Military

South Korea has detained a North Korean soldier who crossed the heavily guarded border this week, in what is believed to be a defection attempt. “The military secured a North Korean soldier in the central border area on Tuesday evening, and relevant authorities are currently investigating the details,” the Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement to media, as reported by Yonhap and cited by AFP on Wednesday.

Tens of thousands of North Koreans have fled to the South since the Korean Peninsula was divided by war in the 1950s. Most escapees risk crossing the land border into neighbouring China first, before entering a third country such as Thailand, and eventually arriving in South Korea.

Defections directly across the land border dividing the Korean Peninsula are relatively rare, as most of the area is dense forest, heavily mined, and closely monitored by troops on both sides. North Korean defectors are typically handed over to Seoul’s intelligence agency for screening upon arrival in the South.

According to data from South Korea’s Unification Ministry, more than 34,000 North Koreans have fled the isolated country to the South. In 2024, 236 North Koreans arrived in South Korea, with 88 percent of them being women. Pyongyang uses harsh language such as “human scum” to describe its citizens who flee abroad.
