North Korea Fires Projectile, Suspected Ballistic Missile, into the Sea

North Korea was detected firing an unidentified projectile on Thursday (6/8) local time. The projectile fell into the sea east of the Korean Peninsula.

The latest launch activity by North Korea, as reported by Reuters and AFP on Thursday (6/8/2026), was reported by both of its neighbouring countries, South Korea and Japan. Authorities in Tokyo suspect Pyongyang has fired a barrage of ballistic missiles.

“North Korea fired an unidentified projectile towards the East Sea,” the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement, referring to the waters also known as the Sea of Japan.

This latest launch came a day after Pyongyang accused Japan of undergoing a “transformation into a warring state” as the country strengthens its military posture in the Pacific region.

“Something that may be a ballistic missile has been launched from North Korea,” Japan’s Ministry of Defence said via social media platform X.

Japan’s Defence Minister, Shinjiro Koizumi, said this week that his country’s military needs to be strengthened with “a sense of urgency and crisis”. This was stated after a newly released government assessment reviewed the growing threats from China, Russia, and North Korea.

Responding to this, Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, asserted that Pyongyang’s “leadership” would prepare additional military options as a clear response to Japan’s change in attitude.

Throughout this year, North Korea has conducted a series of weapons tests, including short-range ballistic missiles, artillery rockets, and other tactical weapons designed to strengthen the military capabilities of the isolated country.

The latest confirmed test, held at the end of June, according to North Korean state media KCNA, involved an upgraded 240 mm multiple rocket launcher system, tactical ballistic missiles, and 155 mm self-propelled howitzers.
