North Korea has denounced Japan’s recent test-firing of a Tomahawk cruise missile, according to state media reports on Wednesday. Kim Yo Jong, the influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, called on the international community to heighten its vigilance against what she termed Japan’s ‘wartime expansionism’. ‘It is now clearer than ever that this is merely a deceptive tactic by the successor to a war criminal state to realise its old dream of wartime expansionism,’ Kim was quoted as saying by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). Her remarks came days after Japan’s Self-Defence Forces conducted their first test launch of a US-made Tomahawk cruise missile. According to Japan’s Kyodo news agency, the national security strategy adopted in 2022 paved the way for the country to acquire counterstrike capabilities, while remaining within the bounds of its pacifist constitution.
