The North Jakarta Water Resources Agency (SDA) is repairing the Kali Pegangsaan embankment in Kelapa Gading, which collapsed due to sediment dredging activities. The 25-metre repair is targeted for completion by the end of June 2026 to anticipate potential flooding in the area. “The embankment repair work is still ongoing, with completion targeted for the end of June 2026,” said Head of the North Jakarta SDA, Heria Suwandi, in Jakarta on Sunday. Heria explained that the handling of the embankment collapse spans 25 metres in length with a height of 2.5 metres. He stated that the embankment gave way due to sediment dredging and the collapse occurred because the embankment’s construction was already old. When sediment dredging was carried out using heavy equipment in the canal, the foundation of the old embankment collapsed. According to him, the embankment collapse was caused by sediment dredging activity, which led to a lowering of the base level beneath the old embankment’s foundation. The embankment repair utilises split stone material to reconstruct the damaged and collapsed retaining wall. Meanwhile, sediment dredging activities in the canal are still being accelerated to prevent the waterway from becoming shallow. “Mud dredging is still underway at the location. However, the dredging segment has shifted to another point in the canal,” Heria said.
