North Jakarta Water Resources Agency Constructs Drainage Ponds to Prevent Flooding in Kelapa Gading
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The North Jakarta Water Resources Sub-Department (SDA) is constructing drainage ponds as an effort to anticipate flooding on Jalan Gading Nirwana, RW 23, Pegangsaan Dua Ward, Kelapa Gading District. “The work is targeted to be completed in May 2026,” said the Head of the Kelapa Gading District Water Resources Implementation Unit, Supiyan, in Jakarta on Tuesday. He stated that the construction is a follow-up to residents’ aspirations regarding the need to optimise efforts to prevent water pooling during heavy rain. “This is an effort to anticipate flooding that often occurs during heavy rain,” he said. The drainage ponds are being built with a length of 3.4 metres, width of 2 metres, and height of 3 metres. At the site, two drainage ponds will be constructed, located at the front and back of the residential area. “We are deploying nine personnel from the Blue Troops. One unit of portable pump is also on standby to help channel water to the river canal during the work,” said Supiyan. He added that the initial excavation is carried out using heavy equipment, followed by manual work to ensure better results. “These retention ponds are estimated to hold up to 150 cubic metres of water,” he stated. A resident, Urip (42), said that RW 23, consisting of eight RTs, experiences pooling with heights ranging from 20-30 centimetres during high-intensity rain, disrupting residents’ activities. According to him, pooling often occurs due to the area’s position in a basin. Not only that, the surrounding roads have been raised, making water easily flow into residents’ settlements. He hopes that the construction of these retention ponds can become a solution to reduce pooling in the area. “I hope that after these retention ponds are built, the pooling can be significantly reduced and residents no longer have to worry when it rains,” he said.
