North Jakarta Mayor Urges Community to Actively Sort Waste
Jakarta (ANTARA) - North Jakarta Mayor Hendra Hidayat has urged the community to actively sort waste from the source to reduce the volume of waste sent to the Bantar Gebang Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST) while supporting sustainable waste management targets.
“This activity is part of the government’s efforts to promote better waste management through the habit of sorting waste from the source,” said Hendra Hidayat during the Declaration of 100% Waste Sorting in North Jakarta event held in Semper Timur subdistrict, Jakarta, on Friday.
He stated that this declaration is also a follow-up to the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government’s programme in supporting the national waste management targets.
He hopes that public awareness will increase in maintaining environmental cleanliness.
“While supporting the creation of a sustainable waste management system in North Jakarta,” he said.
Meanwhile, Indonesian Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq explained that sorting waste from the source is part of a series of roadshows to various regions to ensure the waste sorting programme runs systematically and measurably.
“We, together with the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government, are conducting roadshows from one area to another to ensure waste management plans can run systematically and measurably,” he said.
He added that the government targets national waste management to reach 63.41% by 2026.
According to him, one key step to achieve this target is to stop open dumping practices (open dumping), including in Jakarta.
He noted that Jakarta produces around 8,000 tonnes of waste per day and requires gradual and planned handling.
“We hope that by August 2026, Jakarta will be able to reduce organic waste sent to Bantar Gebang. Then, by the end of December 2026, no more organic waste will be sent there,” he said.
Furthermore, in 2027, only residual waste is targeted to be disposed of at the Bantar Gebang Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST), while other waste is handled at the source.
