North Jakarta Environmental Agency Declares Tanjung Priok Underpass TPS Illegal
The North Jakarta Environmental Agency has declared the temporary waste disposal site (TPS) under the Wiyoto Wiyono Toll in Tanjung Priok to be an illegal or unauthorised facility. Head of the Waste and Hazardous Waste Handling Section of the North Jakarta Environmental Agency, Ardiyanto, stated that the location is not included in the list of official TPS. “It is indeed an illegal TPS because the land also belongs to CMNP (PT Citra Marga Nusaphala Persada),” said Ardiyanto when contacted on Thursday (2/4/2026). Ardiyanto explained that his agency plans to permanently close the site after the process of clearing the rubbish piles is completed. “So, we plan to level the location and the target is to finish within three days,” he said. He revealed that at least dozens of trucks have been deployed to address the rubbish accumulation at the TPS. “Yesterday, on Wednesday (1/4/2026), there were already five trucks, and today there are 18 trucks as per my check this morning,” he disclosed. Ardiyanto assured that his team has coordinated with various parties to ensure no further waste dumping occurs at the site. “So, we will level it and coordinate with district and ward colleagues for picket duty to monitor,” he added. Kompas.com observations at the site on Tuesday afternoon (31/3/2026) showed rubbish piled up to a height of about three metres. The waste consists of food scraps, plastics, styrofoam, cardboard, and wood. Some rubbish is scattered to the roadside in front of the TPS. A pungent rotten smell is detectable even from about 50 metres away from the pile. Several waste cart transporters arrived and dumped rubbish at the TPS multiple times.
