North Jakarta Environment Agency Holds Free Emission Testing at Mayor's Office
The North Jakarta Environment Sub-agency held a free vehicle emission testing service at the Mayor’s Office on Tuesday. “This emission testing aims to monitor the level of vehicle owner compliance with applicable emission standards,” said Evy Sulistiawati, Head of the Pollution Control and Environmental Damage section at the North Jakarta Environment Sub-agency. The activity, part of the 2026 World Environment Day commemorations, tested 45 vehicles, including official cars, employee vehicles, and those belonging to visitors entering the office complex. Evy stated that the initiative represents a government effort to encourage public compliance regarding the importance of maintaining vehicles that are environmentally friendly. Inspections were carried out from 8am to 12pm local time, involving officers testing various types of operating vehicles. “From this activity, we can see the percentage of vehicles that meet regulations and are environmentally fit to operate,” Evy said. She detailed that out of 45 vehicles tested, 29 were motorcycles, 15 were petrol-fuelled cars, and one was a diesel-fuelled car. However, of the 29 motorcycles inspected, 12 failed the emission test. Officers provided the owners with education on the importance of engine maintenance and regular servicing to reduce the level of air pollution produced by the vehicles. Evy noted that free emission testing services are not only conducted within government office areas; the North Jakarta Environment Sub-agency regularly holds similar activities across six sub-districts in North Jakarta through an outreach approach to the community. This step is taken to broaden service coverage while raising public awareness about the importance of emission testing as part of efforts to maintain urban air quality. According to her, well-maintained vehicles are not only more fuel efficient but also produce lower emissions, thereby reducing air pollution. “We hope more vehicle owners become aware of the need to conduct emission tests and carry out regular vehicle maintenance. This is a tangible contribution to supporting improved air quality in Jakarta,” Evy said. Emission testing serves as an important instrument in reducing the impact of air pollution from the transportation sector, as well as supporting the realisation of a healthier, cleaner, and more sustainable urban environment.
