Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Fire and Rescue Sub-department (Gulkarmat) for North Jakarta and the Thousand Islands provided fire preparedness education to students at the State Community Learning Centre (SKB) 37 Jakarta on Untung Jawa Island, South Thousand Islands, as part of the school’s School Environment Orientation Programme (MPLS).

“The education aims to improve the students’ knowledge and preparedness in facing potential fires from an early age,” said Agus Sumarwan, Head of Sector VIII of Gulkarmat South Thousand Islands, in Jakarta on Wednesday.

He said his office wants to instil awareness in students of the importance of fire prevention and recognising potential hazards in their surroundings.

“As well as understanding the initial steps that must be taken when an emergency occurs,” he said.

He hopes the material provided can equip students to protect themselves as well as their schools and homes.

The students were taught about the causes of fires, evacuation procedures, and how to use portable fire extinguishers (APAR).

“This is an effort to improve community preparedness starting from school age,” he said.

Meanwhile, an MPLS participant, Aulia Rahma, said she gained a great deal of new knowledge from the activity.

“We now know how to prevent fires and what to do when a fire occurs. The activity was engaging because there were explanations and hands-on practice, making it easier to understand,” she said.
