North Jakarta Administration Tackles Waste Accumulation Along Muara Angke Coastline

The North Jakarta City Government is accelerating the management of waste accumulation along the Muara Angke coastal area in Penjaringan District.

“A total of 35 joint personnel have been deployed to sweep and transport waste in the coastal area,” said the Head of the North Jakarta Environmental Agency, Edy Mulyanto, in Jakarta on Wednesday.

According to him, the cleaning operation involves joint personnel from the North Jakarta Environmental Agency, the Thousand Islands Environmental Agency, the Water Body Waste Management Unit, and the Marine Police (Polair).

He explained that the waste collection process is being carried out using waste collection vessels belonging to the Thousand Islands Environmental Agency and the Marine Police. The waste accumulation does not only originate from the Muara Angke area but is carried by the currents from 12 rivers that flow into the sea.

Furthermore, the phenomenon of the west monsoon season has caused waste to be carried by currents and accumulate along the coastline. This waste originates not only from Jakarta but also arrives from buffer regions such as Tangerang and Bekasi.

“The impact of waves and wind pushes the waste material until it accumulates in this area,” said Edy.

Additionally, waste cleaning at the location had previously been carried out manually by local officers. “However, to accelerate the handling process, heavy equipment will be deployed,” he added.
