North Jakarta Administration Plants Rice-Alternative Food Commodities Across 70 Locations

The North Jakarta City Government has commenced the planting of food commodities to supplement rice, including waxy corn, edamame, cassava, sweet potatoes, bananas, and honey pumpkins, implemented simultaneously across 70 locations.

This activity is part of the 2026 Simultaneous Planting Movement for Rice-Alternative Crops across all administrative regions of DKI Jakarta.

“This simultaneous planting movement is a form of collaboration to encourage the community to utilise available land to produce food and strengthen the food security movement,” said Fida Hendra, Chairperson of the North Jakarta PKK Driving Team, during a planting session at Lovely Garden, Sunter Jaya, Tanjung Priok, Jakarta, on Monday.

Fida stated that the movement serves as a collaborative effort to incentivise the use of available land for food production. In North Jakarta, the simultaneous planting has been carried out at 70 sites spread across six sub-districts.

She explained that of the 70 locations, 15 are in Cilincing, 10 in Koja, 11 in Kelapa Gading, 20 in Tanjung Priok, 7 in Pademangan, and 7 in Penjaringan.

According to Fida, Lovely Garden is an ideal location for this activity due to its urban farming concept, which focuses not only on harvests but also provides space for learning and empowerment, including for children with special needs.

Lovely Garden is a form of CSR support from the St. John Bosco Church in Sunter Jaya. Similar collaborations are being continuously developed with various parties to support urban farming activities in North Jakarta.

She added that the development of urban farming products is expected to serve as a gateway for community empowerment and encourage the emergence of MSME products with added value.

The event at Lovely Garden also included the harvesting of various urban farming products, which were subsequently processed into food and beverages.

Several of these processed food and beverage items were prepared directly by children with disabilities who learn and participate in activities at Lovely Garden.

“In North Jakarta, we always provide motivation and spirit to urban farming enthusiasts, whether at the RW, PKK, school, or religious institution levels,” she concluded.
