North Barito Begins Rp48 Billion Slum Upgrading Project in Lanjas

The North Barito Regency administration in Central Kalimantan has initiated the redevelopment of a slum settlement area in Lanjas sub-district, valued at Rp48.55 billion, with a ground-breaking ceremony combined with the handover of relocation land certificates. The project represents a concrete step by the local government to improve the quality of residential areas while supporting the urban face of Muara Teweh, according to Junaidi, Head of the North Barito Housing, Settlement Areas and Land Agency. The development is based on several regulations, including the Regional Regulation on the 2026 North Barito Regency Budget, a Regent’s Decree on the designation of slum housing and slum settlement locations, the Regent’s Regulation on the Detailed Spatial Plan for the Muara Teweh Urban Area 2022–2042, and the North Barito Regional Medium-Term Development Plan 2024–2029. The scope of work includes the redevelopment of a 610-metre slum settlement area in RT 04, RT 05, and RT 06 of Lanjas sub-district, improving environmental quality and public spaces, widening and upgrading roads, and constructing a Waterfront City area. For this initial phase, the construction will cover 372 metres of the total 610-metre plan, with the remainder to be continued in 2027 to ensure the entire area is comprehensively redeveloped. Junaidi expressed hope that the development would reduce slum areas, enhance the quality of the settlement environment, improve public accessibility, and create a more orderly, safe, comfortable, and aesthetically valuable riverside area as a new icon for Muara Teweh. North Barito Regent Shalahuddin stated that the development is one of the regency government’s strategic projects to realise a more orderly, clean, healthy, safe, and comfortable urban area. He noted that the day marked a historic milestone with the start of the strategic slum redevelopment project in RT 04, RT 05, and RT 06 of Lanjas sub-district. As the centre of government and economic activity for North Barito Regency, Muara Teweh deserves adequate infrastructure and a more beautiful, representative cityscape. Through this slum redevelopment project, the government is not only improving the physical condition of the environment but also striving to enhance the community’s quality of life by providing a healthier environment, improved sanitation, and more liveable residential areas. The local government remains committed to delivering better urban spatial planning, with the redevelopment serving not merely to beautify the city but to improve quality of life, environmental health, and public comfort.
