Normalisation of Kali Cakung Lama a Long-Term Solution to Flooding, Says North Jakarta Mayor

North Jakarta Mayor Hendra Hidayat has said the Cakung Lama River normalisation programme is a long-term solution to tackling flooding in the area.

“We fully support the Cakung Lama River normalisation programme as a long-term solution to flood management,” Hendra said in Jakarta on Thursday.

He said North Jakarta residents strongly support the move and hope the programme can reduce the flooding that has frequently occurred.

The North Jakarta city government is committed to continuing to collaborate with the provincial government and the community so that the programme runs smoothly and delivers tangible benefits.

Hendra further said that the inspection carried out by Governor Pramono Anung at the Cakung Lama River could accelerate the normalisation work so that it is realised soon.

“So that the community can enjoy a safer, more comfortable environment free from flooding,” Hendra said.

“Currently, only about one kilometre has been completed, so we are targeting 2.6 kilometres to be finished by March 2027,” Ika explained.

However, she said, the normalisation work also requires land acquisition in the downstream section.

“The downstream segment is important because if it has not been cleared, the water flow from the widened section will still be obstructed,” Ika said.

Meanwhile, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo is targeting the normalisation of the Cakung Lama River in Cilincing, North Jakarta, to be completed by 2028.

He said the Cakung Lama River normalisation is one of three rivers that are the focus of the Jakarta provincial government.

“In my era, I have decided that normalisation must be carried out seriously. So there are three areas where we are carrying out normalisation, the first being Ciliwung, the second Cakung Lama, and the third Krukut,” Pramono said after inspecting the Cakung Lama River in North Jakarta on Thursday.
