American jazz singer Norah Jones on Tuesday became the latest in
a string of performers to cancel a concert in Indonesia after
foreign governments warned of an imminent attack by extremists.
Jones, whose 2002 album Come Away With Me won eight Grammy
awards, was scheduled to play Jakarta on March 1, 2005, but
scrapped her appearance without giving any reasons, concert
organizers Java Musikindo said in a press release.
Last week Australia, Britain and the United States issued
warnings that militants could be planning an attack in Indonesia
in the run-up to Christmas. They advised citizens against travel
to the Southeast Asian country.
Java Musikindo has already had two foreign performers, Bond
and Alicia Keys, cancel performances in the Indonesian capital
because of security concerns following a bomb attack on the
Australian embassy here in September.
In its statement, the promoter expressed hopes that "security
conditions in Indonesia improve" to avoid future concert
cancellations.
The world's largest Muslim-populated nation has been hit by a
string of attacks in the past three years blamed on Islamic
radicals. The deadliest, the October 2002 Bali bombings, killed
202 people.
