Nongsa Changi Cable Strengthens Batam-Singapore Digital Connectivity

The international submarine cable Nongsa Changi Cable (NCC) has officially begun operations to strengthen digital connectivity between Batam, Riau Islands, and Singapore, supporting the development of the data centre ecosystem. The inauguration was attended by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, Singapore Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong, and several digital sector stakeholders. Speaking in Batam on Monday, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto stated that Indonesia is currently entering an era of digital transformation marked by increasing infrastructure needs. “We are navigating a rapidly growing industry between data and automation. We are also entering the AI era, which requires fast connectivity support. Through the NCC, capacity reaches 1.6 petabits per second,” he said. Airlangga noted that Batam continues to develop as a digital economy hub, supported by the development of Nongsa Digital Park, which currently has an electrical capacity of up to 120 megawatts to support the data centre industry. “Digital infrastructure also requires a reliable electricity supply. Therefore, Batam’s electrical capacity will continue to be increased,” he said. The 50-kilometre infrastructure is expected to strengthen the data centre ecosystem, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence development in both countries.
