Non-standard electrical installations identified as fire risk

The South Jakarta Administrative City Government has stated that electrical installations that do not comply with established standards pose a significant risk of triggering fires.

“Disaster mitigation should not only be viewed from an electrical perspective, as natural factors also play a major role. However, the main cause of frequent fires is short circuits resulting from installations that do not meet standards,” said the Deputy Mayor of South Jakarta, Firmanuddin Ibrahim, in a statement in Jakarta on Friday.

To address this, he emphasised that providing education regarding electrical safety and disaster preparedness is a government obligation to ensure workplace safety, building security, and the safety of the wider community.

He expressed hope that such educational initiatives could be implemented down to the sub-district level.

“Safety and reliability mean that the electrical system is capable of operating continuously without disruption. We need to make improvements if there are deficiencies in the security standards of our respective buildings,” said Firmanuddin.

According to Firmanuddin, non-standard electrical installations carry a high risk of causing fires, electric shocks, and material losses.

Through these socialisation activities, the South Jakarta City Government hopes to increase the understanding of building managers, technicians, and the general public regarding electrical safety regulations.
