Nokia launches handset
JAKARTA (JP): Nokia Mobile Phones, part of the Finnish Nokia Group, introduced the improved version of the N-2110 telephone handset used for the global system for mobile communication (GSM) here yesterday.
The company's senior vice president for the Asia-Pacific and the Gulf, Jouko Hayrynen, said that Indonesia is one of the key markets in Asia together with China and India, and that Nokia was aiming to double the number of cellular telecommunications subscribers.
In addition to the improved N-2110, there are two Nokia handset types available in Indonesia, the N-2010 and the N-2110.
The new N-2110 handset, which offers up to 50-hour standby time and data transmission capability, is sold in Indonesia through PT Amcol Citra Gallery at less than Rp 3 million (US$1,306) each (including the installation fee).
Since the government eliminated the 25 percent import duty on cellular telephones in October, competition among handset distributors has been getting keener. Leading GSM handset brands in Indonesia include Motorola, Ericsson, Alcatel and Siemens.
An Amcol executive, James Limengka, said that his company sells about 2,000 units of Nokia handsets per month in Indonesia. (icn)
