Noel Ebenezer's Plea: Guilty Admission and Government Policy Criticism

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The plea of former Deputy Minister of Manpower, Immanuel Ebenezer Gerungan, alias Noel, contained a confession of guilt, his life journey, and criticism of government policies. Noel presented his plea during the trial of alleged extortion related to the Occupational Safety and Health (K3) certification process at the Jakarta Corruption Court on Monday, 25 May 2026. Noel said the incident caused him deep regret, he admitted his mistake, and acknowledged failing to uphold his duty as a public official. “This case has been a massive blow to my life. I have felt how a reputation built over years can crumble in an instant,” Noel said. “Before His Honour, I want to start with the simplest, most direct, and most honest statement. I was wrong. I admit my guilt,” Noel said. He said he should have been more cautious in performing his duties and maintaining relationships and communications. Noel stressed that he did not wish to justify his actions or blame others. He expressed shame towards his family and the workers who had previously sought his assistance. “I also imagine the workers who once came seeking help may be wondering why the person they trusted is now in this situation,” Noel said. “I am not making this confession in empty words. I realise true regret does not stop at speech,” he said. During the trial, Noel also recounted his difficult childhood, stating he grew up without a father after his father died when he was about two years old. “I grew up without a father. When I was around two years old, my father passed away,” Noel said.
