Former Deputy Minister of Labour Immanuel Ebenezer Gerungan, also known as Noel, admitted that the case involving alleged extortion in occupational safety and health (K3) certification has been a major blow in his life.

During his plea hearing at the Jakarta Corruption Court on Monday (25 May 2026), Noel expressed deep remorse, acknowledged his mistake, and stated he had failed to uphold his duty as a public official.

‘This case has been a tremendous blow to my life. I have experienced how a reputation built over years can crumble in an instant,’ Noel said.

Noel admitted guilt in the case concerning alleged extortion related to K3 certification.

‘I should have been more vigilant in every aspect of my role, every relationship, communication, work environment, and situation that could lead to issues and damage public trust,’ he said.

Noel insisted he did not intend to justify his actions or blame others.

In his plea, Noel also revealed the emotional burden he has endured due to the case. He recalled his family sharing in the shame caused by the scandal.

Not only his family, but also the workers he had previously assisted felt his shame.

According to Noel, public office is a trust that must be managed with full responsibility.

Noel stated his remorse was not merely words but a conscious effort to improve himself.

‘I am making this admission not as empty words. I understand that true remorse does not stop at speech,’ he said.
