Nobel Committee 'inventive'
Nobel Committee 'inventive'
From Bisnis Indonesia
The most surprising news item in the last week has been the
announcement of East Timor anti-integrationist Ramos Horta as a
co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.
What were the Nobel Committee's considerations and criteria in
making their decision, which is unsympathetic to the world
community?
A friend of mine has told me that every year the Nobel
Committee has to consider a number of people for all the Nobel
prizes.
Apparently Ramos Horta was selected after the committee became
slightly confused as the deadline approached. So the choice of
the political adventurer seems to have been forced upon them.
My respect for the Nobel Committee began to wane years ago. It
started with the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize first to Jimmy
Carter and then to Yitzak Rabin. Even now the Middle East peace
process has not been finalized, yet they were given a peace
prize. It does not make sense.
