No wider sidewalks needed

From Koran Tempo

With regard to the broader sidewalks for Jakarta as proposed
in a letter to Koran Tempo, July 22, it should be noted that the
provincial administration designs walkways to ensure pedestrian
comfort and safety, despite the presence of heavy traffic.

The construction of these pavements is designed so that their
size, width and height are in harmony with main roads and suit
the needs of pedestrians.

Therefore, it is not necessary to broaden the existing
sidewalks by, for instance, covering over roadside ditches
because the drainage system must be checked and cleaned
regularly.

Existing sidewalks do not need to be widened as long as they
can be used optimally by pedestrians, without disturbance from
parked vehicles, vendors or booths.

It is these obstructions that make sidewalks narrower and
disrupt the smooth pedestrian flow. Consequently, the Jakarta
administration, based on public order regulations, feels obliged
to do something to guarantee pedestrian comfort and safety.
