Jayapura (ANTARA) - The Sarmi Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), Papua, is still awaiting reports on the impact of the 5.4 magnitude earthquake that occurred in the early hours of Tuesday. Acting Head of BPBD Sarmi, Hartono Hasan, told Antara on Tuesday that his team is still conducting field checks. There have been no reports yet on the impact of the earthquake, which startled residents and woke them from their sleep. “When the earthquake occurred around 01:47 WIT, residents were woken up and went outside their homes because the shaking startled those who were sleeping soundly,” said Hartono. The Jayapura Regional V BMKG reported that the earthquake’s epicentre was located at coordinates 2.08° S; 139.25° E, precisely in the sea 59 km southeast of Sarmi, Papua, at a depth of 12 kilometres. Considering the epicentre’s location and hypocentre depth, the earthquake that occurred is a shallow earthquake due to activity along the Anjak Mamberamo Fault. Analysis of the source mechanism shows that the earthquake has an oblique thrust movement mechanism. This earthquake was felt in the Sarmi area with an intensity scale of II-III MMI (vibrations felt clearly indoors, vibrations felt as if a truck was passing by) and is not expected to generate a tsunami.
