No records broken in Senayan pool
JAKARTA (JP): Four-hundred-and-two swimmers have failed to break any national record during a three-day national aged-group swimming championship at Senayan pool.
The purpose of staging the event, which ended on Saturday, was to select swimmers for Indonesia's team competing in the 1999 ASEAN Aged-Group Swimming Championships in Singapore from June 4 to June 6.
The championships was also used for selection of a national squad for the 20th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Brunei, Darussalam, in August and the qualifying round for the 15th National Games in Surabaya next year.
The Indonesian Swimming Federation (PRSI) deputy in charge of athletes' development, Kristyono Sumono, said the athletes' declining performance was because there was a lack of local competitions.
He expressed hope that PRSI provincial chapters could stage competitions to boost athletes' form in the future.
Antara said host Jakarta still dominated the pool by winning 51 golds, 28 silvers and 26 bronzes during the event. East Java trailed in second position by taking home 24 golds, 29 silvers and 23 bronzes, while Central Java was in third position with 14 golds, 18 silvers and 21 bronzes. (yan)
