No new records set at lifting championships
JAKARTA (JP): The record breaking streak ended on the third day of the national weight lifting, power lifting and bodybuilding championships here yesterday, but it did not worry national coach Harry Wibowo much.
Harry said that the absence of record breaking performances yesterday was not surprising. "We did not actually expect any records to be broken at this meet," he said.
Two national and one Southeast Asian Games weight lifting records were bettered in the previous two days.
The ongoing championships, Harry said, were not timed to the participants' peak performance.
"Thus, it was because of wrong timing that the last two days saw some records shattered," Harry said. "The broken records should have happened at the 18th Southeast Asian Games in Chiang Mai, Thailand, in December last year."
Harry said that instead the lifters had performed superbly in the annual championships because were under no pressure competing at home.
The event also serves as the qualifying round for the 15th National Games here in September.
There were four men's categories, the 64kg, the 70kg, the 76kg and the 83kg, contested yesterday.
In the 64kg category, it was Erwin of South Sulawesi who triumphed when he combined a total lift of 277.5kg. Trailing right behind him was veteran Sodikin of West Java with 272.5. Yudhi of Bali equaled Sodikin's total lift but was placed third due to the weight ruling. Yudhi weighs 0.9 kilograms more than his West Javanese rival.
In the 70kg category, the gold medal went to I Nyoman Sudarma of Lampung. He lifted a total of 285kg to beat Sutrisno of South Sumatra by five kilograms. The bronze medalist was West Javanese veteran Dirja Wihardja with 262.5kg.
In the 76kg category, Lukman of Lampung won the gold medal with a total lift of 305kg, followed by teammate Catur Media Study with 272.5kg and Sugianto of East Java with 265kg.
In the 83kg category, the winner was Hilman of West Java with a total lift of 290kg. Second to him was Asep of Jakarta, who lifted 272.5kg in total, with West Java's Heri Yasin finishing third after lifting a total of 262.5kg. (arf)
