No Need to Worry: Non-Subsidised Fuel Stocks Like Pertamax Last 30 Days
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia — The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has stated that non-subsidised fuel stocks have significantly longer average shelf life, reaching up to 30 days.
Non-subsidised fuel stocks are considerably higher than the average domestic subsidised fuel reserves.
Deputy Energy Minister Yuliot Tanjung revealed that reserves of RON 92 petrol such as Pertamax reach 29-30 days. For non-subsidised diesel types like Pertamina Dex, reserves reach 45 days, and aviation fuel reserves reach 37 days.
“Pertamax or RON 92, Pertamax Turbo, Pertamina Dex, Avtur — these actually have reserves far above what was previously stated,” Yuliot said during a press conference at the BPH Migas office in Jakarta on Thursday (12 March 2026).
“So regarding fuel availability for public mobility, we believe it is very adequate,” he added.
Although overall reserves are calculated at 23-25 days, the domestic fuel resilience ecosystem reaches 30 days, according to him.
“This is certainly part of our effort to improve service to the public regarding fuel availability in the country,” he said.
Previously, Energy Minister Bahlil Lahadalia explained that the current domestic fuel stock can meet Indonesia’s needs for the next 21 days. However, this calculation does not mean fuel will run out within 21 days.
Rather, fuel tanks are continuously replenished daily. He compared fuel tanks to water containers: when oil is withdrawn daily, new oil fills the tank in accordance with its capacity.
“The point I am making is our storage capacity. Our storage capacity does not exceed 25 days. The oil we referred to has a capacity of 23 days. But this does not mean it runs out after 23 days — that is not the meaning. That is the storage capacity. Today it is 23 days, some goes out for example 1 million kilolitres, and more comes in. Because our production continues,” he explained.
“It is like a tank. You know what a tank is? When I was in the village, there was no piped water, just a tank. The tank collects rainwater. The capacity might only be 3 tonnes. When there is no rain, the water is stored there,” he added.
“So do not foolishly think that in 21 days our oil will run out — that is not what it means,” he emphasised.
“We use it for bathing, maybe it is half empty. Once half is empty, rain falls and it fills again. Yes, it is like that. So do not foolishly think that in 21 days our oil will run out — that is not the meaning. Do not mislead our people. Instead, provide good education, dear friends, so we do not misunderstand. Let us use our intelligence to convey what is correct, true information. You can use social media but do not become social media that harms our people. I am not lying, by God I am telling you the facts. That is why with our storage that is only 25 days, President Prabowo’s order is that we must build a minimum storage of 3 months. That is the national standard,” he said.
