No need to propose Cabinet
No need to propose Cabinet
From Koran Tempo
Indonesian businessmen have urged that the two presidential candidates in the runoff announce the proposed lineup of their cabinets, particularly those to be tasked with economic matters.
"It is important to announce the economic team right now, as otherwise it will be like buying a cat in a bag," said Sofyan Wanandi, chairman of the Indonesian Employers Association.
I do not agree. If a proposed lineup of a cabinet is announced now, it will leave more room open for collusion between ministerial candidates and certain businessmen -- and hence, more opportunities for corruption.
Besides, the announcement of a possible ministerial lineup may lead to public criticism of those whose names have come up for certain Cabinet positions.
What matters most is that the public can trust a presidential candidate to possess unquestionable qualifications to lead the country and consolidate his Cabinet. Without this ability, a president will find that his Cabinet, though made up of highly intelligent people, will only hamper his policies.
