No More Tales of Falling Gas Canisters: Dumai Residents Grateful for Sturdy New Bridge

Residents of Bumi Ayu sub-district in Dumai, Riau, are breathing a sigh of relief now that a sturdy new bridge has been constructed, replacing an old wooden structure that had become a source of fear. A local resident, Fatmawati, recounted how the bridge was originally built by a retired police officer, Helmi Chaniago, in the 1990s when the area was still forest. Over time, the wooden bridge deteriorated, developing holes and becoming so fragile that there were incidents of people dropping their gas canisters into the river below. “We used to be so worried crossing it,” Fatmawati said. Now, the bridge has been completely transformed with a robust steel plate structure, eliminating the anxiety of the local community. The new bridge serves as a vital artery for residents, providing the shortest route to the main road and the city centre. The reconstruction is part of a larger programme by the Riau Regional Police to build 80 ‘Merah Putih Presisi’ bridges across the province in commemoration of the 80th Bhayangkara Day. During the inauguration, Riau Police Chief Inspector General Herry Heryawan stated that the 80 bridges represent a collective effort to strengthen social connectivity, expand public access, and open up opportunities for more equitable economic growth. Fatmawati and her neighbours expressed their happiness and pride, grateful that they no longer have to worry about the safety of the bridge they rely on daily.
