Bekasi - West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi has emphasised that he will no longer tolerate community organisations (ormas) controlling public facilities for personal interests.

He made this statement following reports of a level crossing on Jalan Ampera in Bekasi, the site where a Green SM taxi was struck by an electrified commuter train (KRL), being controlled by an ormas.

“All Bekasi City Police Resorts must take action today; this is the West Java Governor’s directive that there should be no more ormas or thuggery controlling public assets for their own benefit,” Dedi told reporters at Bekasi City Hospital on Wednesday (29/4/2026), as quoted from Kompas TV’s YouTube broadcast.

However, in the short term, the level crossing needs to be equipped with barriers to enhance safety.

“Within this week, the crossing barriers must already be installed,” he said.

Following up on the directive, Bekasi Mayor Tri Adhianto stated that the Transportation Department has taken over the guarding of the crossing, which was previously controlled by unofficial parties.

“Today, in line with the Governor’s instructions, the Transportation Department has taken over to guard the crossings at those two gates, in Ampera and Bulak Kapal. For now, still using manual (barriers),” Tri said on the same occasion.

Tri emphasised that this takeover is an initial step to ensure the management of level crossings is under official authority, while also preventing practices of extortion or control of public assets by certain groups.

The incident occurred at the platform of Bekasi Timur Station at KM 28+920.

The accident resulted in 16 female KRL passengers being killed. Dozens of other passengers were injured.

The victims are currently receiving treatment at several healthcare facilities, including Bekasi City Hospital, RS Bella Bekasi, RS Primaya, RS Mitra Plumbon Cibitung, RS Bakti Kartini, RS Siloam Bekasi Timur, RS Hermina, as well as RS Mitra Keluarga Bekasi Timur and Barat.

Meanwhile, 240 passengers on the Argo Bromo Anggrek train were reported safe.
