No More Classroom Anxiety: Goodbye to SPP Arrears Warning Letters

An afternoon at SMK Bina Nusa Mandiri in Ciracas, East Jakarta, proceeds as usual. Classroom activities continue as students focus on their respective vocational subjects. However, a significant change is now felt by most students and the school: concerns over unpaid tuition fees are gradually disappearing since the Jakarta Provincial Government implemented the Free Private School (SSG) programme.

Before the programme began, outstanding school fees were a common issue at private schools, including SMK Bina Nusa Mandiri. Deputy Principal Muhammad Yudistira stated that most students come from lower-middle-income families, with financial difficulties often hindering parents’ ability to pay education costs. He noted that payment arrears were not a new problem, though the school had always tolerated delays to ensure students could graduate.

The Free Private School programme has also altered the school’s routine. Previously, homeroom teachers regularly reminded parents of payments through warning letters, but this is no longer necessary. ‘Now it’s unnecessary—it’s much easier. Parents no longer have to worry about school fees or receive letters demanding payment,’ Yudistira added. He explained that the programme fully covers all students with a Jakarta ID card.
