No mercy for demonstrators

JAKARTA (JP): The military forces will take stern actions
against anybody staging demonstrations in the city during the
40th anniversary commemoration of the historic Asia-Africa
conference in Bandung, West Java, a high-ranking official said
yesterday.

Chief of the Jakarta Military Command Maj. Gen. Wiranto warned
yesterday: "We will not tolerate those who want to humiliate the
country in front of the delegates of the meeting."

The ceremony on Sunday will be attended by President Soeharto,
UN Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali and ministers from the
111-member Non-Aligned Movement.

"We have to safeguard the activities of our country's guests
during their visit here from any types of disturbances," Wiranto
was quoted by Antara as saying.

Wiranto made the statement at the induction of Lt. Col. Liliek
Achmad Saroyo as the new commander of the West Jakarta military
district, replacing Lt. Col. I.P. Sisworo.

In his speech, Wiranto said that because West Jakarta is a
busy financial area in the city, it will also invite various
social problems and criminal activity.

"This condition needs more attention and a special effort is
needed to control this region," Wiranto added.(yns)
