No Longer Just for Young People, Blok M Now a Magnet for Family Holidays
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Blok M area is no longer synonymous with being an exclusive hangout for young people or a destination for viral culinary experiences.
On Sunday afternoon (17/5/2026), the area in South Jakarta appeared to be transforming into a favourite destination for families who want to spend their weekend holidays together.
The area around the Blok M food festival and pedestrian zone was filled with family groups who came with their children.
One visitor, Husman (42), a resident of Kebayoran Baru, said that he came to Blok M with his wife and two children at the request of his children.
“The kids have been busy asking to come here because they saw on TikTok ice cream and mochi that looked really good,” said Husman when met by Kompas.com at one of the stalls on Sunday.
According to Husman, the decision to bring his family to Blok M started from his children’s curiosity after seeing various viral culinary content on social media.
However, that impression changed after seeing the condition of the area which is now more organised.
“It turns out that the area is now much more organised and comfortable for walking around with children, not as crowded as it used to be,” he said.
After getting the mochi that his children wanted, Husman and his family chose to rest on one of the wooden benches available in the area.
They plan to spend time until late afternoon without having to spend a lot of money on entertainment.
“It’s very close to home and easy to access. So this is an affordable holiday alternative that makes the kids happy,” he said.
Meanwhile, another visitor, Nirmala (38), came with her husband and teenage child. She said that Blok M was chosen because it could accommodate different tastes within her family.
