The Jakarta provincial government will temporarily suspend the car-free day (HBKB) on Jalan HR Rasuna Said on Sunday, 17 May.

Head of the Jakarta Transportation Department, Syafrin Liputo, said that the evaluation results showed that the implementation of the car-free day on the Rasuna Said corridor previously provided benefits to the community, both in terms of public space and environmental quality.

“The car-free day on Jalan HR Rasuna Said adds to the alternative space for sports and public space for the community. The results of air quality measurements around the location during the implementation of the car-free day were also recorded as being better compared to working days,” said Syafrin in a written statement on Saturday (16 May).

He explained that the car-free day on Rasuna Said also helped reduce the density of visitors in the Sudirman-Thamrin area.

Based on data from the Jakarta Transportation Department, the number of visitors to the provincial-level car-free day on the Jalan Jenderal Sudirman-MH Thamrin corridor decreased from 29,256 people on 3 May 2026 to 13,759 people on 10 May 2026, or a decrease of around 52.97 percent.

“This condition shows that the car-free day on HR Rasuna Said can break up the concentration of crowds in Sudirman-Thamrin so that community activities are more spread out,” said Syafrin.

However, he said that the implementation of the car-free day on 10 May on Rasuna Said still left several notes for evaluation.

These include the lack of turning points on the east and west sides of the corridor, the lack of installation of Transjakarta lane dividers, and the continued presence of illegal parking in several locations.

In addition, the arrangement of MSMEs needs to be improved because the activities of traders extend to the middle of the road.

Several road work projects on alternative routes also still cause traffic jams.

The Jakarta Transportation Department also noted that there were still differences in road height levels after the dismantling of the monorail pillars and the accumulation of community activities in the Plaza Festival area, causing runners and cyclists to use the Transjakarta bus lanes.

Syafrin ensured that all of these obstacles would be followed up with a cross-agency car-free day working team.

The Jakarta provincial government is also preparing a legal umbrella as the basis for the implementation of the car-free day on Jalan HR Rasuna Said.

He explained that improvements to supporting facilities and the arrangement of community activities would be carried out so that the implementation of the car-free day on Rasuna Said would be safer, more comfortable, and more orderly.

“The car-free day on Jalan HR Rasuna Said is planned to be held again starting in June 2026 every Sunday from 05.30-09.00 WIB. The Jakarta provincial government hopes that the presence of the new car-free day corridor can expand community access to public spaces for sports and interaction in the city,” said Syafrin.
