No Aceh rebels in Malaysia: Envoy

JAKARTA: Malaysian Ambassador to Indonesia Dato' Hamidon Ali assured on Monday that none of separatist Free Aceh Movement (GAM) members taking refuge in his country.

"We did not find any Acehnese rebels residing in our country," the ambassador said after meeting Vice President Hamzah Haz on Monday.

He further said that there used to be one leader of the separatist movement living in Malaysia, but the man had left the country few years ago.

One GAM leader, Malik Mahmood, used to residing in Malaysia, but he is currently holding a permanent residence permit from Sweden.

The ambassador also said that during the ongoing operation in Aceh, his country did not detect any inflow of refugees from the province.

During the meeting, Hamzah and Hamidon discussed about the planned working visit of the vice president to Malaysia in September.

"The Vice President will conduct an official visit to Malaysia in September," the ambassador said.--JP
