Nipah Park Fire: Makassar BPBD Awaits Official Investigation Results

The management of Nipah Park has confirmed that conditions at the mall and office complex on Jalan Urip Sumoharjo, Makassar, are safe and secure following a fire incident on Sunday evening. The Kalla Group-owned mall has resumed normal operations as of 10.00 WITA today. Property General Manager of Nipah Park & Office, Aswan Amiruddin, stated that the fire was quickly brought under control thanks to the alertness of internal officers and personnel on the ground. “We are grateful there were no fatalities in this incident. Swift action ensured the situation was managed well,” Aswan said via an official statement on Monday. The fire was reported on Sunday at around 21.30 WITA, as the mall’s operations were winding down. Flames were first spotted by staff on the fourth floor, specifically on the building facade above a tenant’s signage. Internal officers conducted initial handling using light fire extinguishers before fire engines arrived. Head of the Makassar Fire and Rescue Service, Fadli Wellang, disclosed that 30 fire engines were deployed to extinguish the blaze. “The firefighting operation took about 15 to 20 minutes until the flames were subdued. The affected areas were the third floor, housing a HERO supermarket, and the fourth floor, where a Timezone amusement centre is located,” he explained. Based on a preliminary assessment by the Makassar Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the fire was strongly suspected to have been caused by an electrical fault or short circuit in a neon box sign. However, BPBD Makassar Head Fadli Tahar stressed that the exact cause is still pending the results of an official investigation by the authorities. BPBD has urged the public not to disseminate unverified information regarding the impact of the incident. Nipah Park management reiterated that the safety of visitors and tenants remains the top priority in ensuring smooth operations following the event.
