A multi-vehicle crash occurred on the Cipularang toll road at kilometre 93, in the Sukatani area of Purwakarta Regency, West Java, on Thursday night (5 March). Two people were killed and four others were injured.

Purwakarta Police Traffic Unit chief AKP Enggar Jati Nugroho said the crash is suspected to have started with a container truck travelling from Bandung to Jakarta.

‘The accident involved nine vehicles, suspected to be caused by the container truck coming from Bandung towards Jakarta,’ Enggar said at the scene on Thursday night (5 March).

Enggar explained that as a result of the incident two people were declared dead, while four others were injured. All victims were evacuated by officers and taken to Abdul Rojak Hospital Purwakarta for further medical treatment. The vehicles involved in the crash were taken to the Jatiluhur towing pool, Purwakarta.

According to Enggar, the two fatalities were inside a pickup truck with registration plate B 9718 VAF that was involved in the crash; the identities of the victims are still being identified.

Several vehicles involved in the crash appeared to have severe damage, particularly at the front and rear due to sequential impacts. Police officers, toll operators, and towing teams were seen actively carrying out the evacuation of the involved vehicles.

As a result of the incident, all lanes on the stretch from Bandung towards Jakarta were temporarily impassable. Officers then implemented traffic control and staged vehicle evacuation. Police are continuing investigations to determine the exact cause of the pile-up (E-2).
