MANILA (AFP): Nine Philippine policemen were jailed for life
here on Monday for the murder of two men, a lower court said.
Chief Inspector Francisco Alhambra and another policeman were
found guilty of murdering two members of a family and wounding a
third in a 1993 shooting in the town of Maragondon, about 50
kilometers south of Manila, the court clerk said.
Manila trial court judge Luis Arranz rejected the defendants'
account that the three men were armed and had shot it out with
the policemen, the clerk said.
All nine convicts are members of the police force of Carmona
town south of Manila.
They were also given a separate 14-year jail term for the
attempted murder of a third victim, who survived the attack to
become the government's main witness in the case.
