Nine power projects inaugurated

JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Mines and Energy I.B. Sudjana
inaugurated last Saturday three power plants with a total
capacity of 815 megawatts (MW) and six electricity facilities
worth Rp 2.7 trillion (US$1.17 billion).

The three new power stations are a 430-MW Belawan combined-
cycle power plant worth $353 million in Medan, North Sumatra; a
similar plant worth $263 million with a capacity of 185 MW in
Muara Karang, Jakarta; and two coal-fired electricity units worth
$226 million built at the Bukit Asam power station in Tanjung
Enim, South Sumatra, with a combined capacity of 130 MW.

The six electricity facility projects are four 150-kilovolt
(KV) transmission facilities and two 500-KV electricity exchanges
in West Java, Central Java, East Java and Bali.

PLN's president Djiteng Marsudi was quoted by Antara as saying
at the ceremony in Tanjung Enim that the nine projects are
financed with loans from France, Australia, Japan, Austria, the
Asian Development Bank and the World Bank and well as funds from
the government and PLN itself.

He said the Belawan project was financed with an Australian
loan in addition to funds from the government and PLN.

The Muara Karang power project was financed with Japanese
export credits and Austrian loans, he said.

He added that the gas for Muara Karang will be supplied
through a pipeline by Arco of the United States from its offshore
Bima gas field in Tanjung Karawang, West Java.

Djiteng said that construction of the Bukit Asam power units
-- by GEC Alsthom of France -- was partly financed by the French
government.

The state-owned coal mining company PT Tambang Batubara Bukit
Asam will supply 800 tons of coal per day for the two new units.

"The two new units and the existing two at the Bukit Asam
power station, all with a total capacity of 260 MW, will be able
to generate one billion kilowatt hours per year," he told
reporters after the inauguration ceremony.

The first two units were inaugurated by President Soeharto in
1988. (04)
