Nine out of Ten Answers from Google AI Overview are Accurate, but Pay Attention to This
The Google AI Overview feature, or Google’s AI summary located at the top of Google Search (google.com), can generate fairly accurate answers. According to recent research, Google’s AI summary can produce nine out of ten correct answers.
This means that for every ten answers presented by Google AI Overview, nine are correct and only one is incorrect. Although quite accurate, users should always be careful when consuming the information it provides.
Like most AI programs, Google AI Overview also has potential inaccuracies. For a search engine like Google, these inaccuracies are important to note so that users can use it more wisely.
As with other AI programs, some users have reported that Google AI Overview produces inaccurate information. Recent research also shows that Google AI Overview still has room for improvement in terms of accuracy.
Since May 2024, Google Search has not only presented a list of web pages related to search keywords to find information. However, through Google AI Overview, Google can summarize information.
So, when users enter a keyword, such as “When will the Samsung S26 be released?”, Google AI Overview will display a summary of information about the release date of the Samsung S26. This summary is compiled from information presented on several websites.
With this summary from Google AI Overview, we can get information more quickly because we don’t have to open related websites. Although it makes getting information easier, the question arises as to whether the results of Google’s AI summary are accurate or not.
The startup company specializing in AI research and development, Oumi, has researched the accuracy of Google AI Overview. The results of its research are quite good, but there is an important note, given that Google is a large platform used by almost all users.
In general, Oumi found that nine out of ten pieces of information presented by Google AI Overview are accurate. This comparison means that there is only one inaccuracy in every ten summaries generated by Google AI Overview.
However, this inaccuracy becomes quite concerning when compared to the number of searches on Google. For your information, Google processes more than five trillion searches per year.
According to Oumi, with that total average number of searches per year, Google means providing tens of millions of incorrect answers every hour or hundreds of thousands of inaccurate pieces of information every minute.
This means that the accurate information presented by Google AI Overview does include websites as references. However, the websites that are referenced by Google AI Overview do not fully contain the information presented.
Oumi analyzed the accuracy of Google AI Overview using a benchmark testing tool called SimpleQA, which is widely used in various industries to measure the accuracy of AI systems.
