Nine Indonesian Citizens Detained During Global Sumud Flotilla Mission as FPCI Backs Indonesian Diplomacy to Secure Their Release

The Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia (FPCI) has expressed deep concern and condemned Israel’s military actions intercepting and detaining civilians taking part in the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) 2.0 in the Eastern Mediterranean. According to Global Peace Convoy Indonesia (GPCI), as of 20 May 2026, nine Indonesian citizens (WNI) were detained in connection with the operation. The mission was to deliver humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people in Gaza. FPCI urged the Israeli authorities to immediately release all detainees unconditionally, guarantee the safety of civilians involved, and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza in accordance with international law. They also welcomed the joint statement issued by the foreign ministers of ten countries condemning the repeated attacks by Israel on the flotilla. Looking ahead, FPCI expressed full support for Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in protecting its citizens, noting that intensive diplomacy continues amid rapidly evolving on-the-ground developments. Reports highlighted a video posted by Israeli Minister Itamar Ben Gvir illustrating how Israeli forces handle detained Global Sumud Flotilla activists on their way to Gaza. It was noted that Israel intercepted all vessels bound for Gaza taking part in GSF 2.0, according to mission organisers on 20 May. The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that all Indonesians participating in the Global Sumud Flotilla 2.0 toward Gaza were detained by Israel. The Indonesian government continues diplomatic coordination to ensure the safety of Indonesians detained; Foreign Minister Sugiono assured the safety of several WNI aboard the flotilla, and Indonesia is coordinating with Jordan and Turkey.
