PT Nindya Karya (Persero) is advancing the construction of salt ponds in Rote Ndao Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), set to become a national salt production hub.

The project, part of the National Salt Industry Centre (K-SIGN), is owned by the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) and aims to strengthen national salt self-sufficiency.

Indonesian Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, along with KKP’s Director General of Marine Management A. Koswara and Nindya Karya’s President Director Firmansyah, inspected the project site on Friday, 22 May 2026.

During the visit, Gibran highlighted that national salt demand reaches approximately 5 million tonnes annually, yet domestic production still falls short of meeting this need.

‘Our annual salt requirement is 5 million tonnes, and we cannot yet meet this demand, which is why this project is crucial for fulfilling domestic salt needs,’ Gibran stated in a press release on Monday, 25 May 2026.

The Rote Ndao salt ponds are designed with an annual production capacity of hundreds of thousands of tonnes, using an integrated management system to enhance quality and production efficiency.

Beyond supporting the national salt industry, the project is expected to boost local economic growth by creating jobs for nearby communities, both as salt farmers and project workers.

‘As the construction contractor, Nindya Karya is committed to supporting government programs through infrastructure development that enhances productivity and strengthens the competitiveness of domestic industries,’ said Nindya Karya Management.

Of the 10 zones, the government is developing Zone 1 at 1,025 hectares and Zone 2 at 899.54 hectares. The remaining 11,776 hectares across eight zones will involve investors, including corporations requiring large-scale salt for their production.
