The arrival of the NIMO Caldera project in the Toba Caldera Resort (TCR) area, Ajibata, marks a new chapter in the competitive landscape of premium tourist destinations in North Sumatra. As part of a strategic investment managed by the Lake Toba Authority Executive Body (BPODT), this project carries high expectations to transform the face of Lake Toba tourism into a world-class destination. A recent visit by the Minister of Tourism, Widiyanti Putri Wardhana, to the area reinforces that synchronisation between regulators and investors is a key determinant of success in developing Super Priority Tourism Destinations (DPSP). This approach combines the strengths of the natural caldera landscape with contemporary recreational facilities, such as iconic photo spots and integrated commercial areas. This strategy has proven effective at several other NIMO Land locations in Indonesia in attracting niche markets of millennial and family tourists. Founder and CEO of NIMO Land Group, Ilham Sunaryanto, emphasised that the presence of the tourism minister provides a positive signal for the investment climate in the authority area. “We greatly appreciate the support from BPODT and Mrs Widiyanti Putri Wardhana. This is about building a tourism ecosystem that has a broad impact on the local economy and community,” said Ilham in a statement received by Kompas.com on Sunday (19/4/2026). Hitherto, the biggest challenge in the Toba area has been the limited man-made attractions capable of complementing its natural beauty. NIMO Caldera emerges to fill this gap. A crucial point in this development is the sustainability of human resources (HR). NIMO Land commits to prioritising recruitment from villagers around the Ajibata area. This aligns with the directives of BPODT’s President Director, Jimmy Panjaitan, who stresses the importance of inclusivity in every investment project on authority land. The goal is to enhance hospitality standards and professionalism without uprooting the local community’s social roots. “Mr Jimmy is very consistent in reminding us to prioritise workers from surrounding villagers. All previous employees were recruited and trained to have better hospitality standards,” added Ilham.
