Nike supplier sacks 447 workers: Report

HANOI (AFP): A Korean supplier making shoes for Nike in
Vietnam has sacked 447 workers at its Ho Chi Minh City factory, a
report said yesterday.

According to the official labor union newspaper, Lao Dong, the
workers would be laid off this month after the expiry of their
apprenticeships and be paid roughly US$12 compensation.

Sam Yang employs nearly 6,000 workers in its factory located
in the Cu Chi district of Ho Chi Minh City and produces shoes
exclusively for Nike.

The firings at Sam Yang are the latest labor incident
surrounding Nike, whose suppliers in Vietnam have been embroiled
in labor problems.
