Nightlife Venues and Massage Parlours in Makassar Shut Down for Ramadan
The Makassar city government has issued a circular ordering the temporary closure of entertainment venues to mark the holy month of Ramadan 1447 Hijriah and Nyepi, the Balinese Hindu New Year of Saka 1948.
Circular Number 11 of 2026 on the temporary closure of entertainment venues is addressed to all operators and proprietors of karaoke establishments, family singing venues, and massage or reflexology parlours operating within Makassar.
“Regarding Ramadan, we are closing nightlife venues. I can assure you that we will issue a circular to ensure they are not opened,” said Makassar Mayor Munafri Arifuddin on Tuesday (17 February).
Munafri affirmed his commitment to maintaining a balance between commercial activity and religious values as well as social order within the community.
“This will proceed according to the schedule issued by our colleagues in the Social Welfare division together with the newly appointed sub-district and village heads,” he said.
Meanwhile, Makassar Tourism Agency Head Ahmad Hendra said that Ramadan and Nyepi represent moments for reflection, self-restraint, and respect for spiritual values and the diversity that forms the strength of Makassar.
“Compliance by entertainment venue operators is not merely a form of adherence to regulation, but also a tangible contribution to maintaining social harmony and public order, hence the temporary closure,” said Munafri.
Hendra said the policy is not simply about administrative enforcement, but also part of an effort to build collective awareness among all elements of society, including tourism industry operators, to maintain a conducive atmosphere during religious observances.
“We want to ensure that the tourism and creative economy sectors grow ethically, respecting social norms and strengthening Makassar’s image as a classy and civilised destination,” he said.
Hendra noted that synergy between the government and business operators is key to maintaining a balance between economic growth and respect for religious and local cultural values.
“With the support of all parties, we are optimistic that this year’s Ramadan and Nyepi observances can proceed safely, in an orderly fashion and with full solemnity, whilst maintaining public confidence in the tourism business climate in Makassar,” he said.
