Nigerian National Deported from Bali After 93-Day Overstay
The Class I Special TPI Ngurah Rai Immigration Office has taken firm action against a foreign national who violated immigration regulations. A Nigerian citizen with the initials IO was deported after being found to have overstayed his residence permit by 93 days.
IO entered Indonesia on 17 November 2025 through the Immigration Checkpoint at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta using a visit visa. According to his statement, he came to Indonesia to stay in accordance with the validity period of the residence permit granted and to look for employment opportunities in Indonesia.
Head of the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office, Novyandri, explained that IO previously held a residence permit valid until 15 May 2026. However, after the permit expired, IO neither extended it nor left Indonesian territory, leaving him without a valid residence permit.
While in Bali, IO was known to have stayed at several locations around the Canggu area, moving from place to place to avoid checks by officers. He told officers that during his time in Bali he engaged in tourist activities, including visiting beaches and cafes in the Canggu area and trying to make friends in Bali.
IO also admitted that he did not leave Indonesian territory after his residence permit expired because he no longer had enough money to buy a flight ticket back to his country. His overstay was reported by a friend to the police on 13 August 2026.
Based on that report, IO was detained by the Kuta Sector Police and subsequently handed over to the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office on 16 August 2026 for further examination regarding his immigration status.
After examination and investigation, the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office imposed an Immigration Administrative Action in the form of deportation against IO. In addition, IO was proposed for inclusion on the entry ban list in accordance with the provisions of laws and regulations.
Novyandri stressed that every foreign national in Indonesia is obliged to comply with residence permit requirements and cannot ignore the time limits that have been set.
“A residence permit is a time limit that must be respected by every foreign national while in Indonesian territory. When the validity period of the residence permit has expired, the person concerned is obliged to leave Indonesian territory immediately or extend the permit in accordance with applicable regulations. The reason of limited funds does not remove that obligation,” said Novyandri.
Novyandri added that the action against IO was part of the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office’s efforts to maintain order and compliance with immigration law, particularly in Bali, which is one of the main destinations for foreign tourists.
“We will continue to carry out supervision and take firm action against foreign nationals who violate immigration regulations. We hope that all foreign nationals in Bali can understand and respect the applicable rules, including ensuring that their residence permits remain valid while in Indonesia,” he added.
IO was deported by the Ngurah Rai Immigration Intelligence and Enforcement Team on Tuesday, 18 August 2026, on Qatar Airways flight QR961 from Denpasar to Doha, before continuing his journey to Lagos, Nigeria.
The Ngurah Rai Immigration Office emphasised that the deportation was part of the implementation of immigration law enforcement functions as well as an effort to keep Bali a safe, orderly and conducive tourism destination.
